Figures are read from the P-Chain with platform.getCurrentValidators, the same source that decides who validates, so there is nothing to cross-check them against. Total stake is each validator's weight, which is their own stake plus everything delegated to them. Amounts are in AVAX and are never converted.
The history is recorded rather than fetched, one snapshot a day, because the P-Chain keeps no past. That also means a day we fail to record is gone for good, so the job runs even when the rest of the nightly batch fails.
